Belated summer NEwS: Meet ouR optical assistants!
Nora and Annissa are U of M undergraduate students, and interested in a career in optometry or medicine. They have learned many optical and medical aspects of optometry, while contributing great energy and help to the office!
Hi! My name is Nora Chiew and I am currently a rising sophomore at the University of Michigan, majoring in Neuroscience. I am passionate about patient-centered healthcare and supporting the well-being of all people. My favorite classes so far have been Philosophy and Biology, and I want to eventually pursue a career in medicine or optometry. My current specialty interests include ophthalmology, pediatrics, and emergency medicine, and I hope to get exposed to the plethora of others as well. In my free time, I love to play the cello, go gymming, backpacking, hiking, paddleboarding, and do any activity in nature. One of my long-term goals is to explore as many national parks as I can.
During my time working at All Eyes Optometry, I have acquired knowledge regarding comprehensive eye care, medical eye care, ocular diagnosis, the various optical frames we offer, contact lenses, and glasses lenses that are customizable and fitted to each patient’s eye care needs.
Regardless of the concerns and wants each person has, there is always something that can be done to help, resolve, or relieve their concern whether that concerns them wanting glasses adjustments, an updated prescription, new glasses or contact lenses, experiencing medical problems, or even a new stylish frame they love that they can wear comfortably every day. As I go further down my career path, I will most definitely remember the connections that I have made working with the staff and the patients–it is amazing being able to work with a group of people so dedicated to ensuring a good experience here. The smiles and small connections I have built from scheduling appointments, assisting with exam pre-checks, and helping them choose the right glasses have been one of my favorite parts of being an Optical Assistant here; I hope to be able to help every patient find that pair they can look at and love.
To expand upon the vast variety of quality and stylish frames we offer, my favorite collection is the Say-OH brand. The line carries handmade, good-quality frames made in Japan and specifically styled to fit all face shapes. I personally love the designer’s careful choices, such as creating different nose bridge shapes, unique but stylish frames, and having specific color patterns that bring attention away from/to parts of the face as well as balancing out every facial feature. As the months continue, I hope to continue to learn more about patients, eyecare, and the clerical tasks behind being an assistant here at All Eyes Optometry.
My name is Annissa Sisson and I am about to enter my senior year at the University of Michigan with a major in biomolecular science. I have a passion for chemistry and health and I am pursuing a career in medicine, though I have not chosen which specialty yet. In my free time I love to go for long distance runs and try matcha lattes from different cafes in the Ann Arbor area. One day I hope to complete a marathon.
In my time here working at All Eyes Optometry I have learned so much about eyecare and glasses, most notably, how to identify what kind of special features different lenses have. This has led me to start inspecting the glasses of my friends and family, then informing them of the enhancements I believe their lenses and frames have. One invaluable experience that will stay with me as I continue on my career path are the connections that I have made working with patients. Whether it be scheduling appointments, taking their history, or helping them pick out glasses, each unique experience has helped me to learn so much and grown my love for helping others and connecting with people. Something that has surprised me so far is how many different kinds of frames there are, each brand having unique styles and designs that work to enhance and complement different face shapes. While I am still learning how to match frame shapes to face shapes, I hope by the end of the summer I will be able to help anyone find the perfect pair of glasses. So far, my favorite frame collection we have are the Morel glasses. This French brand has frames that look good on anyone. They have a wide range of shapes and colors, but what stands out is their special LightTec feature making the frames feel almost weightless. As the summer continues, I am excited to continue to learn and grow from the work and people I meet in my time here at All Eyes Optometry.
